On the Waterfront
O Ya may be expensive, but it is worth it as you dine in "hip" decor as you eat in one of the best sushi restaurants in Boston. The sushi is inventive and flavorful, and there is also a small menu of Japanese-style dishes and a selection of sakes. The Braised Shiitake Mushroom comes with truffle honey sauce and anise hyssop, and the Hamachi Nigiri has a dollop of spicy banana pepper mousse.
South End
The Butcher Shop at 552 Tremont Street is a small storefront close to the Boston Center for the Arts. Although there are only a few tables and a small bar, it is a full-service butcher shop that preps high-end meats. Try the Steak Tartare with a toasted brioche, the house hotdog and or the Charcuterie plate.
The South Street Diner is easy on your budget, is always open, and gives you the experience of eating in an authentic 1947 Worcester Dining Company car. It is a prime destination for night owls including club goers, visiting celebrities, musicians and college students.
Seaport/Northend
The dockside Boston Sail Loft Restaurant, at 80 Atlantic Avenue, has a moderate price range for its seafood with specialties of a cup of chowder along with a lobster or fish and chips dinner. Enjoy a marina view and a whiff of salt water, especially on the deck when there is a sunny day.
Chinatown and Theater District
The Jacob Wirth Co. Restaurant, at 31-37 Stuart Street, features German, Austrian and Swiss cuisine. As the oldest German restaurant in Boston, it dates back to 1886 and has a 19th-century antique feel. The food offers a wide range of choices including lamb, tenderloin, lobster entrees and imported ham sandwiches. Sauerkraut, red cabbage, chowder, sausage and potato salad are made right on the premises. They also have live music shows.
Somerville Neighborhood
The Red Bones Barbecue can be reached by taking the Red Line to Davis Square in Somerville. This busy barbecue place has moderate prices and great food including Barbecue Hash made with barbecued beef, pulled pork, peppers, potatoes and various spices. Their rack of Memphis-style ribs is served with coleslaw, beans and extra sauce. Add in good regional brews. and a good time is guaranteed. If you have the pulled pork sandwich or the half chicken, they qualify as budget meals.
