Shelton
Known for its delicious berries in the summer and thick Christmas trees in the winter, Jones Family Farms have supplied crops to the area for over 150 years. This is fun for the whole family, making for a great afternoon trip with the kids.
Who wouldn’t want to take a road trip to five different local breweries? For maximum convenience and safety, the bus tours will actually pick you up at your house, so you don’t have to drive after you’ve tried all of those craft beers. Make sure you book tickets in advance because the tours tend to sell out.
Salisbury
Come say that you’ve hiked the tallest mountain in the state of Connecticut. Located in the Taconic Mountains, this peak is known for its beautiful views and wild blueberries. Enjoy the native wildlife, but be on the lookout for snakes if you go in late summer.
East Haddam
Located in the state park of the same name, this medieval-style castle was originally the home of William Gillette, an actor best known for the role of Sherlock Holmes. Known for being eccentric, the performer designed the house to be unusual, which adds to its widespread appeal.
Hartford
While the famous novelist lived many places throughout his life, there was a seventeen-year period during which Mark Twain called Hartford, Connecticut, home. Some of his best-known works were written during his time here, including The Prince and the Pauper and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Mystic
The largest maritime museum in the world, Mystic Seaport offers a vast overview of the history of sailing. The estate holds many iconic ships, four of which have been declared national historic landmarks.
